I work for Fortune 500 company who just bought another small company to make project management segment bigger. Now even though my company bought this new company, the direction is coming from the new company for some odd reason. I’m currently very close to the union station for work. Now the new leadership from the new company wants us to come to their workplace which is another 15kms from my current work location in downtown Toronto. They want us to come 4 days a week to colloborate and learn the new software while we are already coming in 2 days a week at my current company office in the financial district and already have so much work compiled and now will adding more work when we go to this new location. Is this reasonable to do so? I’m coming all the way from Mississauga so it increases even more time for me to reach the new place. Do I have any rights or am I just suppose to accept and go to the new work location? I have been with the company for 6 years and all 4 members of the team feel threatened that if we don’t accept we will lose our jobs. Do we have to do everything the new management says?

An employer cannot make unreasonable unilateral changes your contract of employment, this includes changes to work location, salary, job duties, etc. You may also not have a contractual relationship with the new company and therefore do not have to take direction from the new company. However, this may result in a termination as the companies are owned by the parent company. In short, you do not need to accept the changes to your contract - but it would be a good idea to contact an employment lawyer to discuss your situation in more detail.
