Should I request a layoff from my employer as they have moved me from a technical position into a labour position that does not require the technical certifications that I went to collage to receive. I was never asked if I agree to these changes, I was just instructed verbally that my duties have changed.

You may have grounds to claim that you have been constructively dismissed which occurs when an employer makes a unilateral change to a material term of the employment agreement. This can entitle to you severance. Making a claim for constructive dismissal has several legal nuances and it would be useful to speak directly to one of our employment lawyers who may be able assist you through that process.
