After learning my vacation request for Easter Sunday had been denied, I contacted HR to seek guidance on alternative options that would allow me to observe my religious holiday with my family. During these discussions, HR advised that one particular option would result in the loss of Good Friday holiday pay; however, it was not communicated that choosing this option could lead to a corrective action. The course of action I took resulted in a corrective action being issued more than a week after the Easter weekend, which left me both confused and blindsided. Is there grounds for a Human Rights case here?
Hello,
If your HR department advised you that you could take Good Friday off without pay but then they want to now discipline oyu for taking the day off, then that looks like arbitrary discipline. If you have been provided with a warning, be it written or verbal, the best approach is to write a letter including your side of the story and explaining that you are contesting the appropriateness of the discipline. Insist that this letter be included in your personnel file or wherever the warning letter is being kept. If the warning was accompanied with more severe discipline, either with or without pay, then you should contact us immediately to discuss your options, including bringing a human rights complaint.
