I am looking to initiate medical leave with my employer as soon as possible. My doctor will issue a medical certificate on August 13. I am a department manager with 10 direct reports at a construction company in Calgary. They have no short term benefits. When should I give my notice? What should I say exactly? Can they claim undue hardship?

You could apply for EI sickness benefits which can provide you with up to 26 weeks of financial assistance if you can't work for medical reasons. You could receive 55% of your earnings up to a maximum of $695 a week.

You must get a medical certificate showing that you’re unable to work for medical reasons and for approximately how long. Medical reasons include illness, injury, quarantine or any medical condition that prevents you from working. You should give the notice as soon as you are medically unable to continue working.
