I initially called in sick on July 2nd and remained off work until July 14th with a medical note excusing my absence. During that time, on July 8th, my father was admitted to the hospital, and I notified my employer of the situation on July 12th while supporting him in the ICU. On July 18th, my employer laid me off, but we agreed that I would return on August 18th. Following my father’s passing, with his viewing and funeral on August 8th and 9th, I requested an extension to return on September 2nd instead. My employer asked for an in-person meeting, but I explained that I was emotionally fragile and mentally unwell to engage in any constructive conversation and even offered to provide a doctor’s note, which they did not respond to. Now, on August 21st, they are asking me to provide medical documentation about my ability to return to work on September 2nd, including my diagnosis, restrictions or limitations, treatment plan, and prognosis for recovery. I am wondering if it is appropriate or even permissible for them to request such detailed personal medical information when I am simply seeking to return to work as planned?

Generally speaking, your employer is entitled to information related to any form of accommodation you require upon return from a lengthy medical leave. If you do not need any accommodation and feel you can return on Sept. 2 without issue, I would suggest providing a medical note stating as such which should end the discussion.
