Ask your question and an employment lawyer in Ontario, BC or Alberta will answer in minutes
A Human Resources employee recently sent an e-mail requesting employees confirm our social insurance number by sending the SIN to a shared HR mailbox to update their records claiming that it was missing from employee records. Most of us have been there years. (Personally 27 years). This was provided when we were hired. Do we legally need to re-provide it?
While your SIN is confidential, it is legal and necessary for employers to request it for payroll and tax purposes and the employer has the obligation to protect this confidential information. If you do not feel comfortable providing the information on the shared HR mailbox, you may be able to provide the information in a different format if you reach out to the HR department.
