Hello there,
My employer wants to forcefully use employee vacation days instead of paying for the days closed during the shutdown for hydro maintenance. They do give notice ahead of shutdown atleast a month before.
Please advise me if thats allowed or the employer has to pay as we are promised certain hours of work per week. And they are doing it for quite few years.
Thank you

In Ontario, employers can require employees to use vacation time during a company shutdown, but only under certain conditions. The shutdown period must generally be at least one week long, and the employer usually needs the employee's written agreement, or it may be included in the employment contract. If this has been going on for years, it may be an established term employment now. If you would like to discuss what options you have, please give us a call at the number below.
