I am a writer. I work in an office of privately owned company. I was “temporarily” laid off with no severance or notification. Can I be temporarily laid off without a prior written agreement. This was never discussed and I certainly never agreed to such a thing.

Unless you have a contract which allows the company to lay you off, they cannot do so and you can choose to treat the lay off as a constructive dismissal entitling you to severance. Please use the following link to determine your severance package (http://severancepaycalculator.com/) and then contact us at the number below for a consultation with a lawyer to discuss your options.
