Add Comment Question: Since December, my new boss has reduced many employee hours. I went from 30+ hours (for 3 months prior to the hour reduction) to less than 20 hours each week. One of my managers told me if I got consistent hours for months, that it becomes illegal to reduce my hours regardless of what the employment contract states. I have asked for more hours and the boss did give me 20+ hours for a few weeks, but now I'm back down to less than 16 hours per week. What are my options? The boss has reduced hours in general because they recently took over the store and brought a lot of family over to work in there, so he has to pay them too at the expense of the old employees. Answer: If you have a contract that stipulates that your hours can fluctuate and are not guaranteed then the employer is allowed to change your work schedule and hours.
